PATRON PUZZLE #9
PATHFINDER
Last Wednesday was the first Wednesday of the month, so in addition to the weekly Wordy Wednesday puzzle, people who support me on Patreon at the $5 level got a monthly Patron Puzzle (in this case, a Patron Puzzle #15, a 21x21 Framelinks). I try to announce these Patron Puzzles on my blog a week ahead of time in the hope that it might entice some people to become patrons. It hasn't worked yet, but it's worth a try. However, I forgot to do so in this instance. Thus, I have decided to release one of my old Patron Puzzles for free as a penance.

As further penance, for every correct answer I receive for this puzzle within the next two weeks, I will donate $2.50 to Child's Play Charity, a non-profit which outfits children's hospitals with toys and games (up to a maximum of $50). This charity is one I have supported in the past, and which (if memory serves me correctly) the recent Humble Puzzle Book Bundle also raised money for, An anonymous reader will also match my donation times 10, meaning that every correct answer is worth $27.50!

In this puzzle, each answer starts in the correspondingly numbered square, goes in the indicated direction (North, South, East, or West), and makes one or more right-angled turns as it winds through the grid. When you have finished, every white square will be used in exactly two entries.

Arrange the letters in the 8 shaded squares to form the final answer, an 8-letter word.
